Herd Call-Up: Highlights from James Young's brief yet terrific Wisconsin Herd career

As reported by Adam Johnson of 2 Ways & 10 Days, Wisconsin Herd star James Young will sign a Two-Way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 6'7" guard currently ranks 9th in the NBA G League in scoring at 22.3 points per game in 20 games played with the Herd.

The sharp-shooting Young, a 1st-round pick (17th overall) of the Boston Celtics in 2014, has displayed a well-rounded offensive game and the ability to fill it up on any given night, topping 40+ points in back-to-back games in November.

Here are some highlights from James Young's brief yet terrific career with the Herd:

Young scores 40 against the Red Claws

In his fourth appearance of the season, Young exploded for 40 points versus the Maine Red Claws. It was an incredibly efficient performance: he made 12-of-15 shots (4-of-7 from downtown) and 12-of-13 free throws.

Young scores 41, hits 9 threes, versus 87ers

Just days after scoring 40 points against the Red Claws, JY followed it up with a season-high 41 points, including 9-of-11(!) from downtown, versus the Delaware 87ers. It remains the highest single-game player score in Wisconsin Herd history.

Young named NBA G League Performer of the Week

For his stellar play, including the back-to-back 40-point explosions, Young was named the NBA G League Performer of the Week for games played November 13-19.

JY gets hot, scores 31 vs. Charge

In his penultimate game with the Herd, on December 30, Young got hot versus the Canton Charge, hitting 11-of-14 shots (4-of-6 from beyond the arc) on his way to 31 points.

The versatile big man dominated the NBA G League, averaging 29.3 points and 14.0 rebounds per game in 28 games on assignment from the Milwaukee Bucks. Wood wreaked havoc on both ends of the court for the Herd, recording 25 double-doubles while topping 40 points twice and 20 rebounds three times (including a franchise-record 23 boards against the Capital City Go-Go on January 19). Playing with high energy and athleticism, the 6-11 forward was simply unstoppable at times, shooting 55.8% from the floor, 75.3% from the free-throw line, and adding 2.1 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. Herd Player of the Week Xavier Munford This honor goes to Xavier Munford for the second straight week. Munford continues to dazzle for the Herd, stuffing the stat sheet and delivering highlight-reel plays on a nightly basis. Munford posted a huge line -- 25 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals -- in the Herd's victory over the Blue last week. The 6'3" guard, acquired from the Greensboro Swarm via trade before the season, has displayed an uncanny ability to finish around the hoop, and his 3-point shooting has been scorching hot (52.7%) all year. Munford ranks 6th in the NBA G League in scoring average (24.3 points per game), and is a good bet to see time in the NBA sometime soon. His consistently excellent play for the Herd (and Team USA in the FIBA qualifiers) has shown me he can play at the next level. Around the Herd: Checking in on Two-Way players, recent acquisitions, and more

Checking in on the Two-Way Players Both Two-Way players, Xavier Munford and Marshall Plumlee , have been splitting their time between the Bucks and the Herd recently. Xavier Munford scored his first bucket as a member of the Milwaukee Bucks on February 1 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. "Professor X" finished the game with three points and a steal in seven minutes. It was his second appearance in a Bucks uniform this season, first taking the court on January 20 against the Philadelphia 76ers. With the Herd, Munford continues to be one of the top players in the NBA G League this season. His eye-popping season averages -- 23.2 PPG, 52% FG, 45.2% 3PT, 4.9 REB, 5.1 AST, 1.8 STL in 25 games played -- have him firmly in the G League MVP discussion. Former Duke Blue Devil Marshall Plumlee has appeared in five games with the Bucks since being signed to a Two-Way contract on January 15.
